Denis Papin (1647-c.1713), French physicist, mathematician and inventor - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Papin On the upper landing of the staircase is a monument to Denis Papin by sculptor Aimé Millet (1819-1891), unveiled on 19 August 1880. Papin was inventor of the steam digester (the forerunner of the domestic pressure cooker). His work inspired the development of the steam engine. A Huguenot refugee, he died destitute in London.
